His significant output comprises chamber music, piano works, numerous choral compositions and songs (including settings of folk-song lyrics), as well as large-scale orchestral works in the 1870s and 1880s. His compositions are characterized by the process of developing variation. He is considered an antithesis to the New German School around Liszt, and an advocate of “absolute” music.

Geç Klasik dönem Bohemyalı besteci, piyanist ve öğretmen. Geniş eser yelpazesi içinde özellikle çok sayıda şarkı bestesi dikkat çekicidir. Ayrıca piyano eserleri, ayinler, koro ve orkestra eserleri, sahne eserleri ve oda müziği de yazmıştır. Viyana ve Lviv gibi birçok müzik derneğinin onursal üyesiydi.
1774 17 Nisan'da Skuteč'te doğdu.
1783–85 Chrudim'de Pavel Josef Wolf'tan vokal ve keman dersleri aldı.
1787–90 Jihlava'daki Minorit manastırında vokalist olarak çalıştı.
1790'dan itibaren Prag'da ortaokula devam etti.
1795 civarında piyanist olarak elde ettiği başarılar onu soylular arasında popüler bir piyano öğretmeni yaptı.
1797 Prag'daki Charles Üniversitesi'nde kapsamlı bir eğitim programına başladı (felsefe, matematik, tarih, anatomi dahil). Kendi kendine çalışarak piyano çalma ve müzik teorisi becerilerini geliştirir.
1805 yılında "Lenore" baladı (op. 12) ilk zaferini elde eder.
1806'dan itibaren Kont Jiří Buquoy'un müzik hizmetine girerek ömür boyu maddi güvenceye kavuşur. Haydn, Beethoven ve Goethe gibi isimlerle tanışır.
1811 yılında Charles Üniversitesi ona Beşeri Bilimler Yüksek Lisansı unvanını verir.
1824'ten itibaren, aktif kültürel alışverişin buluşma yeri ve mekanı olan dairesinde kendi eserlerinin performanslarını sahneler.
1836'dan itibaren kamusal hayattan giderek uzaklaşır.
1850 yılında 3 Nisan'da Prag'da ölür.
